Huntington’s Robby Martin is introduced as the Highlanders take on Hurricane in a high school football game on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, at Huntington High School.
Former Huntington High School football star Robby Martin said he’s transferring to West Virginia University from North Carolina State.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pound interior offensive lineman spent one season with the Wolfpack, playing in one game, against Stanford. Saturday, Martin announced on X/Twitter that he’s heading to Morgantown. He has four seasons of eligibility remaining.
WVU was a finalist for Martin out of high school, along with Penn State and Maryland.
“I’m ready to work,” said Martin, who visited WVU on Friday.
Martin was voted the top lineman in the state by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. He was a first-team all-stater, three-star prospect and state champion wrestler in the 285-pound class.
Out of high school, Martin owned scholarship offers from Marshall, Appalachian State, Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Delaware State, Duke, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Jacksonville State, Kent State, Maryland, Miami (Florida), Miami (Ohio), Mississippi State, Old Dominion, Penn State, South Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia State.
Martin said he looks forward to teaming up again with former Highlander teammate Zah Jackson, the three-time Carl Lee Award winner and a safety who signed with WVU.
“I’m proud of him,” Martin said. “I can’t wait to see him ball out.”
Martin played tackle and center in high school. He worked at guard and center at N.C. State and said he’s ready to play wherever the Mountaineers need him.
“I can play anywhere on the line,” Martin said. “All over. I can play the D-line as well as the O-line.”
