The city of St. Albans is preparing for a weekend of community support and inclusive entertainment as Dementia Friendly St. Albans kicks off its annual fundraiser and its second “No Hush” movie event.
The festivities begin Saturday, Feb. 21, with the organization’s signature fundraising drive. In 2022, the Mayor of St. Albans officially declared Feb. 22 as Dementia Friendly Day, a date marked by local businesses pledging 22% of their profits to the nonprofit. Because the anniversary falls on a Sunday this year, 14 local partners will instead donate a portion of their Saturday sales to the cause.
Participating businesses include In Stitches, Lou Wendell Marine Sales, The Café, Shuckers, The Palliative Care Center, Colonial Interiors, Village Sampler, Flowers on Old Main, Martin & Ritz Accounting, Kanawha Terrace IGA, The Tap, Bammy’s, Mendez Pro Auto Detailing, and Headliners Barber Shop. Organizers are encouraging residents to shop locally on Saturday to support both the small business community and the nonprofit’s mission.
The weekend continues Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. with a special screening of "Viva Las Vegas" at the Alban Arts Center on Main Street. Sponsored by The Palliative Care Center, the "No Hush" movie is designed specifically for caregivers and their loved ones living with dementia.
Unlike a traditional theater experience, a “No Hush” screening features dimmed lights rather than total darkness and lower volume levels. The standard rules of cinema etiquette are set aside, allowing attendees to talk, walk around, dance, or sing along as they feel comfortable.
Past attendees have described the events as “transformative.” One participant noted the joy of having a "date" with her husband for the first time in nine years, while another family member expressed gratitude at seeing her mother feel a sense of belonging. The event, including popcorn and refreshments, is free for all attendees. Guests are encouraged to arrive between 1:30 p.m. and 1:50 p.m.
Dementia Friendly St. Albans is a nonprofit dedicated to public education and caregiver support. In addition to community events, the group provides dementia training for local employees, hosts a monthly support group at the Hansford Center, and organizes semi-annual forums featuring experts in the field.
