The “50 Protests 50 States 1 Day” protest, also being referred to as 50501, is set to take place at noon Wednesday at every U.S. state capitol, including Charleston.
While it is not being officially organized by any local groups, entities such as Women’s March of West Virginia, the ACLU and others are expected to gather at the Capitol Complex Wednesday.
Robin Cutlip, president of Women’s March of West Virginia, said she only recently heard about the protest.
She said protesters will gather on the lawn on the south (river) side of the Capitol at noon. Attendees will speak about Project 2025, a governing treatise and collection of conservative policy proposals authored by the Heritage Foundation.
While campaigning for president, Donald Trump denied Project 2025 was a blueprint for his second administration, though its authors include several veterans of Trump’s first term of office and some from his current or planned administration, including Russell Vought, his pick for chief of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
“A lot of people are already losing their jobs, losing their funding for their nonprofit groups that they work with,” Cutlip said.
The event may conclude with a march around the Capitol, she said.
The ACLU of West Virginia posted on its Facebook page Tuesday that while it is not involved in the planning or organization of the event Wednesday, members of its staff, and some of its partner organizations, will attend.
“It is our First Amendment right to gather, and we will be there tomorrow as like-minded people, and our voices will be heard,” Cutlip said.
